Gut Health

It is brilliant to see there are now lots of conversations about gut health and people are understanding the importance of it both mentally and physically.

Gut health refers to the balance of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract. We hear so much about special green powders, kefir drinks but where do we start with creating or maintaining a healthy gut?

Here are a few simple ways we can improve our gut health below:

  • Drink water – water helps break down food so that your body can absorb nutrients. Try drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up and following meals.

  • Change your diet – eat fresh foods and 5 pieces of fruit and veg per day. Limit processed foods and take a prebiotic / probiotic.

  • Lower stress levels – meditation and yoga may help you relieve stress.

  • Eat a high fibre diet – try incorporating prebiotic fibre into your diet with foods cush as onions, garlic, flaxseeds, asparagus, wholegrains and bananas.

  • Eat fermented foods – such as kefir, kombucha or fermented vegetables.

  • Good quality sleep – getting enough quality sleep can improve mood and gut health. Getting 6-8 hours of quality sleep will ensure gut microbes are getting downtime. Wind down before bed by dimming the lights and staying off tech devices a few hours before bed.

  • Bitter foods – try a rocket salad before a large meal to help digestion or adding kale to a meal.
